Nutrition Counseling

Registered Dietitians provide nutrition counseling. Nutrition counseling is about far more than meal plans or nutrition education. Though, your dietitian can help you with that, too! Registered dietitians provide nutrition counseling to help people build a healthier, more trusting relationship with food, their bodies, and themselves.

What Does Nutrition Counseling Look Like?

Food choices are shaped by much more than nutritional knowledge alone. Personal beliefs, culture, family experiences, emotions, identity, neurodivergence, health conditions, body image, and lived experiences all influence how people eat and how they feel about eating. Nutritional counseling explores these influences with while helping you develop practical, sustainable ways of nourishing yourself. Care is individualized to each person's goals, values, culture, medical needs, lived experiences, and lifestyle.

Working collaboratively with you, your therapist, physician, and other members of your care team when appropriate, our registered dietitians combine evidence-based nutrition care with counseling techniques to help you reconnect with your body's needs, challenge unhelpful food rules, reduce anxiety around eating, and build greater flexibility with food.

Sessions may include experiential learning such as trying foods together, meal support, exposure work, grocery or restaurant planning, and hands-on problem solving.

Together, you and your dietitian work to:

● Build a flexible, trusting relationship with food through individualized nutrition care.

● Explore the thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and experiences that shape eating behaviors.

● Strengthen interoceptive awareness (the ability to recognize and respond to internal body cues such as hunger, fullness, satisfaction, energy, and other physical sensations).

● Develop coping skills, self-awareness, and practical strategies for navigating everyday

challenges.

● Practice skills through meal support, food exposures, grocery and restaurant planning,

and other real-world experiences.

● Collaborate with your therapist, physician, and other members of your care team when

appropriate.
