Flood Your Feed: Social Media Accounts to Follow

There are some serious risks associated with being on social media. Many people inherently fall into a mentality of self comparison, using perfectly polished pictures on image based platforms as a reference point.1 This oftentimes leads to a decreased satisfaction with one’s own appearance.2,3 Body image distress and disordered eating behaviors can increase with social media use amongst all genders.4,5 Specifically, accounts that promote the thin or muscular ideal are most damaging.6,7

At the same time, the vast majority of people have an account on at least one social media platform. It can be a way to stay in touch with friends and family, see hilarious memes and learn about hobbies and interests. There are vast benefits to taking a leave of absence from Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, etc. but if you choose to stay, it is essential that you flood your feed with accounts that promote body diversity and inclusivity.

Consider the following recommendations when cultivating your algorithm

  • Follow accounts that depict diversity in bodies, ages, genders, races, and more

  • Interact with content that depicts pets, hobbies, art and other topics that are not appearance based

  • Be sensitive as to whether content is making you feel uplifted and content or discouraged, sad or anxious

  • Mute, block and click “disinterested” if posts bring about feelings of comparison, negative emotion or anxiety

  • Avoid “hate watching,” “doom scrolling,” and “rage bait”

  • Use the keyword filter tool to block triggering terms

Here, you will find a variety of accounts that actively post content in promotion of cultivating a better relationship with food and body. Remember, all individuals have autonomy and can change their content at any time. As of the most recent inspection, these accounts will influence your algorithm toward body neutrality, self-compassion, body positivity and balanced nutrition. If at any point, a creator begins to promote the thin ideal, weight loss and other triggering topics, unfollow them immediately.
